As I was working on draft posts for my blog, I noticed a new tool in Wix, the AI Post Creator. Unless you've been living on a desert island somewhere, you're probably more than aware of both the opportunities and the threats of AI for creatives, especially those who make a living with their creative work.
I've used AI image generators. I've used ChatGPT to make a list of supplies I'll need for an upcoming backyard barbecue I'm hosting, and to give me five good exercises to build upper body strength. What I haven't asked it for is to be me and write a blog post.
So I decided to give it a try, and to take you along with me in case you're AI-curious. What is the process like? What kind of results would I get?
Wix has optimized their AI tool for bloggers. When you start an AI post, all you have to do is select options from a list. If you've written blogs already, AI will even suggest topics for you. For me, I got "Prioritizing Clarity" and "Unearthing your Purpose"—neither of which I'd blogged about yet—and "Finding Your Growth Edges," which I had written a post about already. I chose "Prioritizing Clarity" and was taken to the menu of choices. Who was my target audience? (general, professional, travelers, casual readers, other) What post type did I want? (Listicle, How-to, Personal Story— wait, what? a personal story? That's more than a little disturbing!) Other options I could choose were word count, number of images, adding a call-to-action link, and tone of voice (Professional, Casual, Funny, Confident, Enthusiastic, Other).
Once I'd made my selections, the resulting blog I got was pretty terrible: soulless, vague, and uncompelling, with an uninspired (fake) personal story and an Uncanny Valley rendering (I dare not say "art") of a moody businessman-alien with unnatural hands.
Maybe this post will give you food for thought about how to effectively use AI. I always advise my students that generative AI can be fun and helpful for writing, but it needs to be used responsibly and ethically. It can be a great help in getting ideas and getting them to flow—for example, you could use ChatGPT to suggest frequently-cited sources for a topic you want to write on, or helpful databases you could check for materials.
What AI can't do is think for itself. Not only is it digesting the work of millions of other people and regurgitating it to you in an "original" (aka uncopywrited) form, but it does not have a unique point of view. While you can program a bot to respond in different tones or personas (see the options above as examples), your bot will never capture the individuality and esprit of a human writer.
Do yourself and your readers a favor, and let them hear your voice.
